An Antagonist Tale of Two Cities.

This publication and the team behind it is heavily influenced by the aesthetics and the creative scene of New York City. Yet, the HQ, the ashes from which Antagonist rose, is Berlin, Germany.

How to better celebrate the bond between these two epicenters of forward-thinking ethical subculture than with a photo essay to celebrate the architectural history of the two cities?

Before Antagonist, there was Vegan Good Life, this publication’s predecessor and a coffeetable-quality print magazine on plant-based counterculture. And just like Vegan Good Life, Antagonist, too, is heavily influenced by the creative scene and the distinctive aesthetics of New York City.

And so the creative direction of Antagonist has been striving to combine the best of these two worlds. Welcoming a heavy influence of American pop culture and subcultural references in the design approach, one eye on early influences like the Eastcoast skateboarding and the hardcore scene, as well as the standing NYC has in the world of fashion and the arts, while the other keeping the trademark aesthetics of the old world in clear sight.

”Antagonist is here to push the envelope for the plant-based media space.“

With our Editor at Large a longterm NYC-resident and a pool of amazing creative collaborators on the other side of the pond, Antagonist has been a transatlantic operation from the get-go. Officially curated and created in both Berlin and New York, not only is this new media hub meant to push the envelope for the plant-based space, but is a means for all of us to deepen the bond between these two epicenters of ethical counterculture just as much.

So here’s to new frontiers. What better way to celebrate these two glorious, vast and dirty metropolises than with an architecture photo essay by our own Florian Maas? Right.
